Gross Pet? Giant Burrowing Cockroaches - Crawly and family

Australia's giant burrowing cockroach has the honor of being the world's heaviest insect. According to scientists, the giant burrowing cockroach can weigh as much 30 to 35 grams and nearly 85 millimeters in length.

Giant burrowing cockroaches give birth to live young, raise them in a burrow, and dine on leaves. Unlike many cockroaches, they do not have wings and are not considered pests. They can even live as long as 10 years. It may be hard to believe, but some even consider the giant burrowing cockroach makes a good pet.

"Giants are like the koala of entomology, eating gum leaves and leading a pretty sedentary life."

Dr Lo said they were popular pets - Heathcliffe is owned by a university media manager - and can fetch $100 a pair.

Here are some giant burrowing cockroach photos.
