NP Rank:
Greek Dope?
I've seen in my travels in the U.S.A. that some states sow wildflower seeds in the median strips along major highways. I believe it is a wonderful idea as it beautifies the highway and visually announces that the state cares about the environment as well as efficient transportation.
In The Toronto Sun, Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, Irene Thomadais writes under the byline "Odd World", about a minor event that teaches the oft-repeated adage, "crime does not pay!"
One Greek individual took the initiative to beautify a portion of the median of a six lane freeway running from Athens to Thessaloniki. Rather than achieve such a goal, the 35-year old found it to be an unprofitable venture.
Tending to his garden involved little effort as the sprinkler system kept the growing plants constantly watered, and there was no real weeding necessary.
That is due to the fact that the 42 individual plants this man tended were not "wildflowers" in the literal sense of the word, but marijuana plants.
Eventually the Greek police drove by this past week as he was working in the garden. Needless to say, the unidentified man was charged and the illegal plants confiscated. Are we talking about two different types of dope here?
Irene concludes the story with a great pun on words: "No word on the potency of the confiscated weed, but I suspect it was middle of the road".
