Was That a Meteor You Saw?
What appeared to be a large meteor streaked across the night sky on September 14, and was witnessed by people across the American Southwest. The meteor was described as bright green. The meteor was caught on video as it raced toward the horizon- you can see it below.
The meteor was reported from Palm Springs to Las Vegas, and Twitter blew up with eyewitness reports and speculation as to the nature of the object.
Of course there's an official explanation:
But the object was probably a "near-earth asteroid" no bigger than a basketball, said Don Yeomans, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory Fellow who manages NASA's Near Earth Object Program.
"It's sort of Mother Nature's shot across the bow," he said. "It's an impressive light show, one of Mother Nature's best."
Yeomans said that the UFO was not a spacecraft, though what if it was the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite? The defunct spacecraft is expected to fall to Earth at around this time.
This is as good a time as any to point you to our UFO feature channel.
