There used to a time when a half-hearted pumpkin carving, featuring two eyes and a toothless grin, was enough to get the job done. Nowadays it takes a lot more creativity to impress the neighbors. It seems that more than ever people are taking pumpkin carving more seriously, producing elaborate designs and posting them on the Internet.

Noel's Fantasy Pumpkins is a site that features some amazing photos of pumpkins carved with fantasy themes, including incredibly detailed etchings of dragons and pirates. He also gives detailed instructions on how to turn a pumpkin into the Death Star from Star Wars.

Others have created a series of drunk pumpkins featuring pumpkins vomiting out pumpkin seeds.

Democratic presidential candidate as proven to be a master of marketing and has encouraged supporters to create Obama-related pumpkins. There's even a site called Yes We Carve and include photos as well as downloadable stencils to help you create your own pro-Obama pumpkin.

Another popular political pumpking is the Ashley Todd pumpkin, dedicated to the John McCain staffer who faked being mugged by an Obama supporter. Be sure to carve in a backwards "B" on the pumpkin's cheek just like Todd did.

If none of those ideas tickle your fancy, Geek Culture offers a handy lesson in how to create your own stencil out of any photo and use it to carve a pumpkin.

I'm amazed at the pumpking carving skills. I remember I struggled through cutting out those simple triangle eyes back when I was carving pumpkins.
