Members of the hate group Westboro Baptist Church failed to show up at a planned protest of The Laramie Project, a play about murdered gay man Matthew Shepherd, in Vancouver BC on Friday, November 28.

A counter-protest and anti-hate rally was held at Havana Cafe at 1212 Commercial Drive, where the play was being staged.  Hundreds waved signs and rainbow flags, cheered and chanted for several hours despite the rain and cold, while passing motorists honked their horns in support.  A small police presence maintained safety on the busy street.

Media reported that the group was turned back as they attempted to cross the Canadian border.
