Easten State Penitentiary - Upper Level

Al Capone served time here at one point.  This penitentiary has been extensively documented for paranormal activity on such channels as Discovery, Travel Channel, and even MTV shot an episode in there.  There's no question that abnormal things occur within those halls.
I think I have an excuse now to get over there (since it's in the North Philadelphia section of the city) to shoot some pictures.  And of course share with you guys at NP those exclusive images and a report.  Check back later this weekend :)

Philadelphia's favorite haunted house is now America's favorite haunted house.

"Terror Behind The Walls" at Eastern State Penitentiary has been named the number one haunted house in the US by AOL's "City Guide."

Sean Kelly is program director at the former prison at 22nd and Fairmount:

"We've been the best for a long time.  It just took a while for people to notice."

I went through a new section of Terror Behind the Walls.  Frankly, I think they need a new word for terrifying. This woman went through the exhibit with me:

"Very, very scary. My heart is racing. My heart is racing.  I'm shaking."

RayBanBro66, I like this story.  It looks seriously creepy.  A night tour around Halloween would be pretty epic.

Thanx for the GS flag CC80...... if I can get my "nerves" together, I would actually go over there on Halloween

This place is scary enough in the daytime when Halloween is far away...I could never go on that tour! I hear it is one of the best in the country, though. If you like being scared out of your wits. ;-)

Thanks to you(?) and NowPublic for using my photo!

I would love to go on this tour. It was spooky just being there during a overcast day. Wondering the Cell blocks at night & hearing the stories would be amazing & scary. I wouldn't sleep for weeks.

Although the thought of stumbling upon a haunting in ESP is exciting, I failed to see any ghosts except the numerous "ghost cat" statues that hide around the grounds.  The cell block most famous for hauntings was closed during my visit, reportedly for renovations needed for the Halloween tour.  I hope to return some day and see this haunted section as well.

I attended Terror Behind the Walls on Saturday, Sept 20, 2008, and I have to agree that it was probably the BEST haunted house I have ever been to. The production was absolutely first rate. Everyone's favorite part -- the 3D / black light labyrinth. It was like a really scary, bad trip.

The waiting line to enter the Eastern State Pen "Terror Behind The Walls" was not just a line but part of the attraction. Ghouls hiding in walls, zombies on stilts and confusion (and sometimes hysteria) awaited those that entered the walls of the penitentiary. One moment your talking to your friends, the next you have a ghoul in your face. The wait was worth it! While not the most frighting Haunted House that I have been to it sure was the most elaborate and well choreographed of the bunch. Top notch actors and great effects bring this erie penitentiary to life (or in this case after-life)!

I went through the Terror Behind the Walls a few hours after doing the daytime tour. During the day, I thought ESP was beautiful from a photographer's standpoint- but the haunted house made me never want to step foot in that place again! I've never been so scared in my life.

Thanx for GS flag Amy.  I have actually seen this place from the outside  close up, and I can tell you it looks intimidating. Just the surrounding wall itself makes you wander what's behind them.  But yes, I will try and get the nerve up to actually go inside and see for myself and "report" back :)

Definitely good material. I was there for a day tour about a week ago--it's a great site for the creepy and weird.

I've gotta say I was kinda disapointed with TBTW. I got a few chuckles, but overall, I was disapointed with it. The ghouls did'nt even try to scare Me. My nephew ( who, by the way), is afraid of cottonballs, did'nt even think it was in the least bit scarry. The 3-D room was cool though. I was looking around thinking that I would rather to see the rest of the prison during a day tour. If this is rated #1 in the US., I don't even want to see dead last. At least I got a few free tickets for a day tour.

Standing on the stairs, framing the shot, I heard the shuffling of footsteps behind me. I felt a bit rushed and took a little less time to take the shot so as not to stand in the way of people trying to exit. I took it and turned around to see who was waiting. No one there.

The people who were convicted and served their time, who are dead now just need prayers. When you hear something in the hallways it is an attention for prayers need from there release from their purgatory. If all people would pray for them all the hallways would be quite. Pray for them and they will have peace!

thank you,

C
