The Merlion is derived from the story of Singapore as the Lion City. Founded in the early 19th century by Stamford Raffles, Singapore became a state of its own in 1965 when it was expelled from the new Malaysian Federation. Unlike the rest of Peninsular Malaysia (except for Penang, parts of Selangor and Perak), Singapore was settled predominantly by people of Chinese descent.
