Iguana causes power outage in Florida

An iguana apparently caused a power outage earlier today, leaving 20,000 customers in the Tamarac and Pompano Beach area without electricity. Florida Power & Light warned the problem might not yet be resolved.
FP&L spokesman Mayco Villafana said "a critter got into the equipment [and] shorted out some of our equipment. That happens every so often. You can't prevent that."
The power was out between 11:55 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. as crews worked furiously to restore it. All customers had their power turned back on.
But utility workers might still need to make more fixes later today, Villafana said .
"This afternoon we might have to [temporarily] drop some customers," he said. "We do not know yet."
Meanwhile, the iguana was discovered. It did not survive.

It is amazing how much damage iguana can cause. I took the photo of this land iguana 0n 03/25/08 on North Seymour Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador where there are no people living there.

Iguanas (& other exotic wildlife) are doing loads of damage all over the world. Check out the Brown Tree Snake in Guam or the Quaker (Monk) Parakeet here in the US (thought to be partly responsible for the BIG blackout in the northeast a few years ago).

I took these photos in Roatan, Honduras. They are everywhere on that island and really enjoy the warmth. I can see why an electrical equipment enclosure would be a welcoming spot for an Iguana. I am sad that the little guy lost his life. Maybe it is time for the electrical company to devise a plan to close in these areas better to stop small animals from getting in and causing problems.

This smiling Iguana came down from the trees to spend time with us on the beach in Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica. She/He?? enjoyed corn chips from our table.
