India Offers Rewards for Sterilization Need a New Car?
Health officials in India are offering cars, motorcycles, big screen tv's and other incentives in exchange for Sterilization. Rajasthan’s Jhunjunu Sitaram, India's chief medical officer is reported as hoping over 30,000 will take them up on the offer in attempts to reduce the overcrowded population in India.
India's population has grown by 181 million people over the past decade to 1.21bn, according to the 2011 census. That's more than the US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan and Bangladesh combined, and if it continues growing at current rates will surpass China's 1.3 billion in the next 20 years.
“According to the 2011 census, there were 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six, compared with 927 for every 1,000 boys in the 2001 census.
"This is a matter of grave concern," Census Commissioner C Chandramauli told a press conference in the capital, Delhi.”
