Chilli peppers belongs to the Capsicum. and an active ingredient Capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide) of chilli's, is an irritant for mammals, including humans, and produces a sensation of burning in any tissue with which it comes into contact. Capsaicin and several related compounds are called capsaicinoids and are produced as a secondary metabolite by chili peppers, probably as deterrents against herbivores.
currently being used n topical ointments to relieve the pain due to nerve damages. The result appears to be that the nerves are overwhelmed from the burning sensation and are unable to report pain for an extended period of time. With chronic exposure to capsaicin, neurons are depleted of neurotransmitters and it leads to reduction in sensation of pain and blockade of neurogenic inflammation.
When I was working @ the medical faculty n UAE University we tried to study the effects of capsaicin by purifying the compound and a minute fraction was injected to lab rats....within 2 hours all of them died due to several reasons incl. serious brain damage.!!!
Long live Chilli's
