Called the "Eye of God" this skylight provided ventilation and light to prisoners at Eastern State Penitentiary. The original restrictions at ESP included solitary confinement of all prisoners and that total silence be maintained at all times. This complete seclusion was thought to aid in the rehabilitation of the prisoners. The method of solitary confinement used is referred to as the Pennsylvania System.
The lyrics from a Silversun Pickups Song, "Lazy Eye" fit the theme perfectly. Undoubtedly, the songwriter was not thinking of the prisoners at ESP, but it works for me. (Abbreviated for space. Complete lyrics here)
I’ve been waiting
I’ve been waiting for this silence all night long
It’s just a matter of time
To appear sad
With the same ‘ol decent lazy eye
Fixed to rest on you
Aim free and so untrue
Everyone’s so intimately rearranged
Everyone can focus clearly with such shine (Repeat)
...
It’s the room the sun and the sky
It’s the room the sun and the sky
