JACK is a sanctuary in the city of Lubumbashi (southern DRC) for baby chimpanzees that were seized from merchants. Babies are illegally sold between 500$ and 1000$. To get one baby 10 chimps (on average) are killed as the babies are protected by all adults of the group.
At the moment the safe haven takes care of 17 chimps. At JACK the animals are allowed to to do what baby chimps do best: having tons of fun!
JACK was named after one of the first chimps seized. The animal died after his cage was set alight, together with another baby. Three animals survived the ordeal.
