Killing someone is seen as a status symbol and said the recent spate of knife murders is just "fashion". That was what two gang members have told Sky News. Quiet shocking huh !! ...

Sixteen young people have been stabbed to death in London alone this year.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has pledged to prosecute, rather than caution, anyone over the age of 16 found carrying a knife. Current police guidance is to prosecute adults caught with a knife, but only to caution those under 18.

The Government has announced it will review knife sentencing guidelines as police continue to question five people in relation to the murder of 16-year-old Shakilus Townsend.

Two men aged 22 and 18, two teenage boys aged 16 and 17, and a 16-year-old girl are being held at south London police stations in connection with the teenager's death.

Sentencing guidelines, due to come into force next month, state that knife possession can be punished with a fine in the least serious cases, but Justice Secretary Jack Straw said this would be re-examined.

I am a professional hunting guide and also need to carry a knife. What I think Sweet East Pearl is trying to get over to people is, If caught with a knife which you dont have a very good excuse to own ie an Artist or Gamekeeper etc and you are in a school or public place you should go to jail.

I have written on this subject and this can be seen on my blog.

The problem we have here in Scotland and the UK is the people who carry knives know they will get away with a small fine if caught.

The public are frightened but the fear should be felt by the criminals.

Thanks for the comments guys, greatly appreciated.  I hope the regulation about this matter will not bring us to another new issue as mentioned above.

If knives were illegal to carry, criminals would still carry knives - they don't obey the law!

I don't believe young people should carry knives on them. This photo was taken from my kitchen for culinary use only. Thanks Liz

@Lizzycon03, my picture was taken at a restaurant, because I was indicating that the restaurant had really bad quality knives.

These kitchen knives are stored in a knife block to protect people from inadvertent injury. Look in the drawer of almost any kitchen in the United States, and you will find knives similar to these.

This knife was planted in my apartment by someone who had a key to it, possibly the landlord or his agent. In a world where rights and private space are not respected people need their knives and other things to keep from being violated. However this knife was intended as a violation of me, my home, and possibly my freedom as it may have been the intention of the person who left it in my room to acuse me of some crime.

A knife, like a car, or any potentially dangerous tool carries responsibility. But taking away the choice and responsibility from law abiding people is not the solution. My photo above is a high performance culinary knife.

Perhaps we need to form an orginization to protect the rights of law abiding citizens.

I suggest that we call it the NKA.  Similar to the NRA, the NKA (National Knife Association) could help people to know the laws and protect themselves from over eager governments that want to "protect the people".

As someone commented above:  If they outlaw knives, the outlaws will have the knives.  Outlaws don't follow laws.  That's why they call them outlaws.

True, RichieN. All states but two in the United States have concealed carry laws. Gun crimes are down in those 47 states. Protection against knives cannot be simply another knife. A gun is necessary protection against a knife. However, the UK prevents the innocent citizen from owning guns, allowing kife killings and home robberies go unchecked. From what I see in countries that ban handguns, I hope we never in the US repeal the second amendment.

What are you going to do when they start using nail clippers, belts, or rocks? Jail people for that as well? How will anyone keep their pants up? Your solution is ridiculous. You can't just keep taking away  peoples  freedoms! Its no wonder people aren't makeing good decisions anymore, because people like you have the government doing all their thinking for them. The best solution is to leave everyone's freedom intact and just make the consequences for wrong behavior so terrible that they will stop committing these types of crime. If you just keep making different items illegal, you are only hurting law abiding citizens. Criminals don't care if it's illegal to carry a knife! And if they do, than they just start using something else. Didn't you learn that lesson when you made guns illegal? Now instead of getting shot, you have people running around stabbing each other like mad! The solution should be obvious, make the penalty so drastic for knife crimes that no one would be willing to pay the price! That way you will still be left with something to cut your tomatoes.
