Jakub Maly: Austrian Olympic Swimmer Dug Too Deep

After getting caught in a seven-foot-deep hole, Austrian swimmer Jakub Maly nearly died.

The Austrian national swim team was training in Pompano Beach, Florida, and was enjoying some down-time on the sand on May 8. The swimmers dug a massive sand hole, described as seven feet deep and six feet wide. Jakub Maly jumped into the hole, and the sides began to collapse. What began as funny turned scary: he was completely buried.

It took 60 rescuers two hours to dig Jakub Maly out of the hole, and he was taken to Broward Hospital with suspected internal injuries. Maly and his teammates are scheduled to fly back to Vienna on May 10.
