James Stempnik Jr, a Detroit mailman, was charged with stealing and delaying the delivery of mail after federal agents found over 20,000 pieces of mail in his home and car.
The mail, some of it a year old, included birthday cards, government checks, utility bills, and court documentation.
Residents along James Stempnik's route had long complained about missing mail, but nobody seemed to suspect James Stempnik until a colleague actually saw him placing mail in his car.
A Postal Service spokeswoman, Shannon LaBruyere, said the motive was not known.
"Nothing was opened. It just appears he was hoarding it," she said.
The recovered mail has been put back into circulation and should be delivered this week.
