Jiggers did not have to kill woman

A lot has been said about jigger infestation in Murang’a District. (KENYA)

The impression created is that jigger infestation is some kind of disease that requires medical attention. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Although poverty plays a role, one doesn’t require a lot of resources to keep jiggers at bay. The trick lies in managing the bug before and after it has bitten you.

If earthen floors are kept clean through constant sweeping and sprinkled with water to minimise dust, fleas will be kept in check.

One cannot sleep if a jigger invades your toe or finger. The pain and scratching can, at times, be unbearable. So I can’t understand how a woman could let jiggers multiply until they killed her.
