In keeping with my theme of National Food Days over the past several weeks, I thought I would wrap up by recognizing foods that aren't given one specific day, but  celebrated throughout the month of July.  Here is a list of this months food related holidays:

I also read that July is National Picnic Month, which goes hand in hand with the aforementioned foods, as I think they would make up a fantastic picnic basket on a hot summer's afternoon.

Here's some information I've found about National Hot Dog Month:

July is National Hot Dog Month, and according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of "meat" in record numbers this summer.
The Council estimates that over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the July 4th weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year), 155 million will be downed.
Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each. They are clearly one of the country's most loved, but most misunderstood, comfort foods. Below you'll find some frequently asked questions regarding the hot dog. For more information, visit the Council's website at www.hot-dog.org. Bon appétit.

There's nothing like a cold ice cream cone on a bright, sunny day:

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. In 2008, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 20.

The U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. About 9% of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation's dairy industry.

National Culinary Arts Month:

This month-long celebration is to promote awareness of professional cooks and chefs and their contributions to new culinary trends and dining excellence. So dine out during the month of July and remember to thank your favorite chef!

And last but not least, National Blueberry Month:

July is National Blueberry Month--a great time to celebrate the health benefits of these little berries.

Blueberries contain more disease-fighting, age-proofing antioxidants than practically any other fruit or vegetable--eating them is an easy way to protect your body from damaging free radicals.

If anyone has any more information on these holidays, or wants to share how they celebrate them,  please fill me in in the comment section below!

This is my "traditional" English breakfast, had at the hotel buffet in London. Starting with the beans, we'll go clockwise: mushrooms, scrambled eggs, croissant (um, isn't that French?), poached egg, grilled tomato, veggie sausage. YUM!

Baked Garbanzo Beans- so easy and healthy! Justopen a can of garbanzo beans, rinse them and dry them off, lightly coat them with olive oil and some spices, and bake at 350 degrees till they are crunchy on the outside. A very nutty snack that is good for you.

Maple baked beans from scratch. Dried beans are the best choice for this dish because they absorb the flavours of the other items as they are cooking. I also like the excuse to eat bacon, since beans are so darn healthy! I add chilli peppers to this dish as well- I like a little kick to play off the sweetness of the maple syrup.

Animated Cupcakes

Cupcakes and ice cream have always brought a smile to my face and I'm sure to many others. This is such a great way to combine the simplest forms of happiness in our life. In this photograph I have joined together chocolate cake with ice cream cones. But a cupcake is not complete without frosting. Chocolate whipped frosting is touched with a rainbow marshmallow twist accent. These cupcakes were created for a smile. Remember, inspiration is free so look around.

These blueberries from last year look swell, but this years (2008) harvest looks greater then ever. Come to Iceland in august and the crop will be marvelous.

This is patbingsu from Coffee Antique in Los Angeles' Koreatown. Patbingsu is a Korean dessert of shaved ice, red beans (pat), ice cream, fresh fruit, rice cake (dduk) and fruity cereal bits. It's the perfect summer dessert. More info at http://westla.savvysource.com/blogpost1247_6_toddler-on-a-sugar-high-patbingsu-korean-shaved-ice-

I received this "ice cream ball" for my birthday. It's essentially a plastic ball you shake up with two chambers, one for ice and rock salt, the other for ingredients. It's advertised as a portable maker, however, the ingredients required make it logistically silly to travel with. Nonetheless, it's fun to throw around the backyard and end up with some ice cream.

That chocolate chip cookie was HOT. On top sat a mound of vanilla ice cream buried under a pile of whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and caramel. I barely finished half of it.

Wow, I just learned July is National Blueberry Month. How timely! This is a bowl of wild blueberries from Mt. Major in New Hampshire. Four of us picked this much on July 19.

I was in San Francisco walking the city and stopped at the famous Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop. I got a large chocolate sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry on top :) It was yummy!
