According to a senior Government Minister, “the Council of the Isles of Scilly is responsible for the islands of Kerrier and Penwith”! (Districts of mainland Cornwall/Kernow)

The astonishing claim was made in a letter from Rt. Hon Rosie Winterton MP (Minister of State for Transport and Minister for Yorkshire and The Humber) to the MP for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George. Ms Winterton was responding to an enquiry from Mr George about the introduction of new Civil Parking Enforcement regulations on the mainland.

Mr George said, “Unfortunately, this is all too typical of the quality of the Government’s comprehension of our area. It’s a problem which is caused by the perpetual revolving door of Ministerial office. Most Ministers aren’t around long enough to get on top of the job.

“Since they don’t even know the basics of the map of the area, it’s no wonder that their decisions about the needs of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are so often all at sea!

“It would be better if they let the democratically elected people of the area decide a great deal more about the setting of political priorities and the delivery of public services. This latest statement merely confirms that they often haven’t got a clue what they’re talking about!” No wonder well over 10% of the people of Cornwall despise the current governmental arrangements and seek independence. After all, Cornwall is bigger than Malta, Andorra, Monacco and a whole lot of other smaller indpendent states as well as states that are self governing like the Channel islands, the Isle of Man and Gibralter.

bryn.myrddin.dimilioc, I like this story. It's good stuff. Pity she didn't paddle off into the mid Atlantic and let the poor Cornish people alone to run their own affairs.
