Like in the scene right out of the move, "A Christmas Story," a ten year old Indiana boy got his tongue stuck to a metal light pole.  Police say the fouth-grader did it on a dare.  Have all boys in the Northern Hemisphere been there?

Fans of the 1983 classic movie "A Christmas Story" will certainly recognize what happened to a fourth-grade student in the city of Hammond, Indiana on Wednesday. The kid was outside in freezing cold temperatures nearing -12C when a friend challenged him to lick a hydro pole.

He obviously never saw the film, because the youngster did it.  And you know what happened next.  The boy's tongue became hopelessly stuck to the pole and police and an ambulance had to be called.

By the time they arrived, the now sadder but wiser young man had managed to work himself free, and he got a lecture from authorities about taking stupid dares, while his mother was told how to care for a bleeding tongue.

I've always wondered about that... would pouring warm water over the tongue/pole bond have dislodged it? I spent my formative years in climates too warm for such flagpolery.

On holiday near Cannes our daughter got her tongue stuck to an ice lolly on the beach - I went to get some sea water to just gently melt it off but she panicked and pulled it hard taking a chunk of tongue surface with the lolly - hurt but soon grew back!

I remember being dared to do this but I did not.  However, I remember some tried it an on a very cold one got his tongue stuck.  Pe lost some skin too.

Was he dared to do it or was he triple-dog dared, the coup de grace of all dares?
