NP Rank:
Larry Flynt and Joe Francis Seek Relief From Porn Bailout
Porn moguls Larry Flynt and Joe Francis plan to ask Congress for $5 billion in financial aid. According to reports, the founders of Hustler and Girls Gone Wild franchises say that the porn industry, like so many others, are being hit hard by the current financial crisis.
"Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation's most important businesses, [and] we feel we deserve the same consideration," Francis said in a statement.
"In difficult economic times, Americans turn to entertainment for relief. More and more, the kind of entertainment they turn to is adult entertainment."
The pair were quick to admit that "the 13-billion-dollar industry is in no fear of collapse, but why take chances?"
While Flynt and Francis' plea for a porn industry bailout may be nothing more than a publicity stunt, there appears to be some merit to the idea that the porn industry is struggling.
Francis, recently imprisoned for nearly a year on a prostitution-related charge after pleading no contest in a plea bargain, cited industry figures that show adult DVD sales and rentals decreasing 22 per cent in 2008, as people turn to the internet for adult entertainment.
According to this piece in Portfolio Magazine, the porn industry has found itself in the same trouble as the music industry, with customers refusing to pay for porn that they can get for free in the internet.
