Lighning Claims Danish Soccer Player Jonathan Richter's Leg

Jonathan Richter, 24, was struck by lightning during a practice game between his team FC Nordsjaelland and Hvidovre on July 20, 2009. The lightning bolt hit his leg and caused him to go into cardiac arrest. Richter was put into an artificial coma for ten days following the game, but was forced to make the desicion to amputate the leg when he woke up.

The operation was a success and Jonathan Richter and is currently recovering at Hvidovre Hospital.

Richter, who lay in a lengthy induced coma immediately following the accident, agreed to the amputation of the lower part of his limb, which was severely damaged by the lightning strike.
