Lost WWII Sub Found, Navy Credits FamilyUSS Grunion Last Heard From July, 1942

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- After a nearby family worked to find the wreck, the Navy confirmed that the wreckage of a sunken WWII vessel found last year off the Aleutians Islands is the USS Grunion.Rear Admiral Douglas McAneny said underwater video footage and pictures captured by an expedition team allowed the Navy to confirm the discovery. He said the Navy is very grateful to the family of the ship's commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Mannert Abele, for hiring the expedition.McAneny said he hopes the announcement will help give closure to the families of the Grunion's 70 crewmen.

The Grunion was last heard from July 30, 1942. Abele's sons hired a team of radar experts to search for the ship after finding information online in 2002 that led them to the vessel's likely location.
