Lydia Ward, a teenage girl form New Zealand fought off a giant shark with her surfboard at the Oreti Beach, Southland. Ward fought off the shark that was lurking in shallow water next to her and younger brother. Ward is still not sure what kind of shark attacked her, but she says it was a "massive grey thing."

Before the girl had a chance to react, the shark managed to bite Ward on her hip through a wetsuit, but the 14-year-old hit the beast with her surfboard. The girl did not notice the wound until she and her brother hastily got out of water. Ward was taken to hospital for treatment, but is doing fine now.
Despite being lauded for her courage, the girl says she is not planning to surf on the beach any time soon.
"It's sort of put me off the beach, but it's still fine with rivers and lakes," she said. "So I'll just stick to them now."
