When I first read this story, I thought, who brings their bear spray to the bar?  Then I re-read it and realized that this took place in Alaska. In a town whose name is even a kind of bear.

A man faces assault charges after allegedly spraying bar patrons twice with bear spray. Kodiak police charged Daniel Pement after the incidents Saturday and Sunday at the B&B Bar.

Police said Pement was escorted from the bar on Saturday, but returned 15 minutes later and allegedly sprayed customers. Police talked to him later and took the bear spray, but were called away on a more urgent matter.

On Sunday, police were called to the bar again after Pement allegedly sprayed patrons with another can of bear spray.

Police found Pement walking down the street and charged him with six counts of misdemeanor assault.

This photo was taken at a rest stop along the highway to Yellowknife, NT, Canada where bears roam like dogs. To give you an idea, on this road trip we saw 4 bear right along the highway. Can never be too prepared. 2 bear spray cans, and 2 bear bangers!! :)

If we are going to try to coexist with wildlife like the the black and brown bear then a lot of us are going to have to keep pepper spray nearby. Inevitably, some people will misuse this weapon the way knives and guns sometimes are. The authorities have to be aware of this and deal with it appropriately. It sounds like the police in this story dealt with it properly.
