A football fan dressed as a sheep had to be taken to hospital after his costume was set alight.

Other fans and passengers on the train said the man ran through the carriage on fire. Some tired to help by throwing beer on him to try and douse the flames.

The police have arressted a man in connection with what happened.

The train was carrying Aberdeen football supporters back home after their side's match against Hibernian FC in Edinburgh but to get the man help the train stopped at Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The train involved, an Arriva cross-country train was the 1808 GMT, service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "British Transport Police can confirm that a male has been arrested and another is assisting with enquiries following a serious incident on board a train in the Kirkcaldy area of Fife at around 1900 hours yesterday."

The spokesman added: "British Transport Police are treating the incident very seriously and investigations are currently ongoing."

I certainly hope the Humane Society takes a firm stance on this. Acting out ones hostility towards sheep should not be allowed.  I rather hope it wasn't a case of mistaken identity from a jilted..............ne'er mind.

It's a totally typical Scottish thing to do, we'll no bother using a fire extinguisher, we'll use our beer instead! lol

Your not allowed to drink on public transport over here, I'm very sure it's illegal.

mudricky, as a Scotsman, satisfy my curioddity, er, curiosity.

Is that an everyday event, in Scotland, to see grown men dressed as sheep, on trains?

never mind the fire, i understand that seeing a sheep, much less a man, on fire, is not your norm.  Nor would seeing a man, dressed as a sheep, on fire, be normal....please tell me that it is not.

I didn't think booze was allowed on the train. Where was the fire extinguisher? No doubt locked in the driver's carriage?
