Wellington:

A New Zealand man who assaulted a teen by hitting him with a spine-covered hedgehog has been fined by a court and ordered to pay most of his fine to his victim.

Whakatane District Court was told Thursday that William Singalargh picked up the hedgehog, a small prickly-backed animal similar to the porcupine, and threw it several yards at a 15-year-old boy in the North Island east coast town of Whakatane on Feb. 9.

HEDGEHOG NOTE:

brushing my knowledge on hedgehogs in india I have this information that there are hedgehogs in India and in Uttarakhand, the state I belong too in India.

I think, hurling a Hedgehog is moreof a crime against animal rather than against a 15 year youth. The man should pay the fine t some animal welfare organisation

Cruelty to any animal is abhorrent. For more than 30 years now our hedgehog family has shared our garden with us. They must be amongst the world's most inoffensive of animals and are a constant delight. Given an evening of watching TV or watching my hedhehogs I know which I would choose every time!

Is their a World Hedgehogg Day?

A hedgehog is any of the small spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the order  Erinaceomorpha. There are 16 species of hedgehog in five genera found through parts of Europe  Asia Africa and New Zealand. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia  and no living species native to North America  those in New Zealand are introduced. for more go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog

This casual animal cruelty is somewhat common, with the UK enacting anti-hedgehog-kicking legislation, and the rather nasty practice of quokka socca in Western Australia.

I agree- the man should definately be charged with animal cruelty! A hedgehog is not a weapon, it is a sweet little animal!

See the pic of our rescue Bravehog who was found in a dumpster! We care for over 200 abnadoned exotic and unusual pets here at Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary www.crittercamp.biz including 5 hedgehogs!

I saw this hibernating hedgehog at a wildlife sanctuary named Secret World this year (2008) I love these small animals and would like to see more of them around. I think its dreadful that anybody would wish to harm them and cannot understand the mentality of anyone that would harm a defenceless animal.

I took this photo in Wanaka, NZ after I'd spent the winter in Antarctica. This was the cutest little hedgehog I'd ever seen, and we hung out for at least 30 minutes while I took pictures of it.

I strongly advise to use this kind of anti-hedgehog-abuse-devises - for action like that !

Our Homer is a wonderful pet. He is very friendly and the kids love him! I can't imagine anyone harming such a sweet little creature.  That man should be tossed himself to see how it feels.
