Wednesday, August 20 | A crazy person, David McGinn, has tried to eat and exercise like Michael Phelps for a day. But McGinn came up a few fried egg sandwiches short of the P. breakfast, drank only two gatorades for lunch, and ate barely anything for dinner. Here's an excerpt from his story.

Breakfast: Obviously, if you're going to attempt the Phelps breakfast you have to work up an appetite. So on Saturday morning, I begin the day with 30 minutes of yoga, 30 push-ups, 90 crunches and a three-kilometre run, burning 936 calories, according to an online calorie counter.

I probably expend more energy prepping breakfast: It takes 45 minutes and uses every single kitchen utensil I own.

I start with the fried-egg sandwiches. I feel it might be possible to eat the whole meal. After polishing two of them off, I move on to the French toast. After eating all three pieces, I'm doing some pretty laboured mouth breathing.

Forcing myself to buck up, I start eating a chocolate-chip pancake the size of my face. Both cups of coffee are done.

Thursday, August 14 | It's the breakfast we've all been waiting for: Phelps's.

Dubbed the 'Breakfast of Champions', the tabloid revealed that Phelps eats three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, tomatoes, fried onions and mayo. Then he has a five egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast and three pancakes with chocolate chips. The total calorie weigh-in: 4,000 calories, or roughly twice what a normal man should eat all day.

Monday, August 11 | Many athletes are blogging about everyday life in Beijing, but no one has gone on record with a breakfast healthier than the one eaten by Adam Kreek on June 23. I'm talking thirteen-ingredient smoothies.

Alarm goes off. It is 6 a. m.

First breakfast: Pint of Smoothie (blueberries, pear, banana, pineapple, yoghurt, flax seed oil, carrot juice, rice milk, powdered greens, whey protein, creatine, glutamine, Green/yerba mate tea

1st row: 2 energy gels and 2 litres of E-Load electrolyte drink

Second breakfast: 3 eggs with cheese and veggies (onions, broccoli, mushrooms, peppers, snow peas), 3 pieces of 12-grain bread, 2 pints of orange juice

If you crave hyper-personal information about athletes like Canadian soccer player Kara Lang craves vegan protein shakes, check out the community of athlete bloggers at Lenovo.com, but bear in mind these pointed criticisms of the website.

I laud the Lenovo concept, but have a number of critiques on execution:

- The aggregation site looks way too corporate. So corporate, in fact, that I fled the site until Churbuck told me that the company does not censor the athletes.

- The site prevents direct access to the bloggers themselves. It first sends you to a pop-up page with a text summary of the blogger's latest posting. This slows the process of getting to the source material. One the most important aspect of blogs is the self-presentation of the bloggers. I want to see how they present themselves.

- The @lenovo2008 Twitter feed accompanying the blog seems to be written by a robot that only has access to a TV and schedule of when events take place. They should highlight the best quotes, complaints, victories written by the athletes themselves, not tell me who is playing next or "Its half time, watching the Beijing Dream Girls".

Definitely the breakfast of champions. If I ate like that, I'd be winning the first medal for Canada.

If I ate like that, I'd be dead...

This is a French Toast served at a Kopitiam near my place (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia).

It is a 2 piece bread with peanut butter between them, coated with eggs and fried till golden. Served with melted butter on top. simply heavenly.

I wish I could eat as much as Michael Phelps and not worry about it going straight to my waist. I'd eat Baked French Toast every morning, if that were the case!

I never thought I'd see the say when what-I-ate-for-breakfast would be considered newsworthy. In this case, carbo-loading is taken to the x-treme... Phelps can worry about weight loss later.

I certainly hope he is able to reduce his calorie intake after all the season is over. I would hate to see how big he would be if he didn't ...

This omlette is from Norma's at the Parker Meridien Hotel. You could smell the butter coming off of it before it even hit the table!

We ordered this coconut french toast at the Kountry Kitchen, a small diner on the island of Kauai. It tastes as amazing as it looks! Try it with coconut syrup and you'll think you died and went to heaven! Michael, this definitely has your name written all over it. Congrats on all those gold medals.

Yep LOTS of proteins and calories going in. But, the things that I 've seen here is no one is looking at how much he is burning off. Swim, if I remember rightly, is one of the fastest sports to burn off calories and some of those are even more demanding of energy than others. He has swam what 7 events so far, not including what he swims to maintain his endurance and flexibility. That is 1 klic, or for those of us south of the border .65 mi. at a time of (I don't know as I don't  have the stats, nor am I much of a sports fan) but certainly A whole LOT faster than most of us. Got to look at the whole forest, not just a tree.

I agree, omelettes are great, anytime. So are vegetable frittatas.

Breakfast of Champions for sure. French toast is part of the dessert on Phelps breakfast menu.

Amaretto French Toast. Nothing says good morning like a good cup of coffee and a healthy dose of DiSarrono maple syrup and butter!

Omlette over rice japanese style. Something new and different for me, but I guess it is sort of a Bento box staple. The little hot dogs are split and there is a crouquette (fried potato cake) instead of has browns. And you gotta love the macaroni salad bathed in mayonaise with cucumber and red pickled radish.

I find fried eggs and rice (or toast, or potatoes, or grits, or "add your starch here") can't be beat.
