Musicians Complain About Their Songs Being Used for Torture

Prominent rock bands have joined forces with a legal charity to campaign against the use of music as an instrument of torture by US military interrogators.  According to British organization Reprieve, the US military has been playing  rock music at deafening volumes to detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay to "break" prisoners.  This practise continues, despite a ban by the UN and European Court of Human Rights.

Using loud music "to create fear and disorient detainee(s) and prolong capture shock" was among a host of interrogation tactics authorised by then commander in Iraq Lt Gen Ricardo Sanchez in a memo dated September 14, 2003.

Reprieve, which represents 33 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, teamed up with high-profile musicians to launch its Zero decibels project, Zero dB, on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The campaign urges supporters to help bring to an end the "brutal practice of music torture". It will feature minutes of silence during concerts and festivals while a petition will call on governments and the UN to uphold their obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." singer-songwriter David Gray has said of the practice.  "That is torture.  That is nothing but torture.  It doesn't matter what the music is -   it could be Tchaikovsky's finest or it could be Barney the Dinosaur. It really doesn't matter, it's going to drive you completely nuts."

For many detainees who grew up in Afghanistan - where music was prohibited - this marked their first exposure to the pounding rhythms, played at top volumes.

According to Reprieve, some of the music used by interrogators is written for children. Christopher Cerf, who wrote music for Sesame Street, told the Associated Press he was horrified to learn songs from the children's show were used in interrogations. "I wouldn't want my music to be a party to that."

Supporters of the campaign, which urges backers to help bring an end to the "brutal practice of music torture" include Massive Attack, Rage Against the Machine, Elbow, The Magic Numbers, James Lavelle of UNKLE, and comedian Bill Bailey and The Musicians' Union, which represents more than 30,000 musicians.
‘Plenty lost their minds’
The experience was overwhelming for many. Binyam Mohammed, now a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, said men held with him at the CIA’s “Dark Prison” in Afghanistan wound up screaming and smashing their heads against walls, unable to endure more.

Bands and artists whose music has been frequently played at US detention sites include AC/DC, Metallica, Eminem, Springsteen, David Gray, Aerosmith, Limp Bizkit, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tupac Shakur, Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Don McLean, Lil' Kim, Rage Against the Machine, Dr. Dre, and children's Barney and Sesame Street theme song.

Wow, sounds like we are grasping at straws here...music...torture...sounds like a form of disorientation to a detainee can't concoct a cover story and thus is more likely to answer truthfully during interrogation. AGHH, mental duress!!
