NP Rank:
Narrowest house in Britain just 9ft wide
A house just 9ft wide is to be built in Bury St Edmunds and will become the narrowest in the whole of Britain.
Although some have been wondering just who would want to live in a 9ft wide house the local council could find no planning reasons to stop its go ahead and so issued planning permission.
Many locals are worried that the house will not be in keeping with the historic setting of Bury St Edmunds and are looking to appeal the planning departments decision to grant planning permission.
The three-storey property in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. will come complete with two double bedrooms.
Tom Stebbing, architect for the scheme, said: "I think the planning committee were concerned it was narrow but after a site visit they realised it wasn't as narrow as it first appeared and they passed it.
"It provides a decent family home on a brownfield site."
Jim Thorndyke, vice chairman of St Edmundsbury Borough Council planning committee, said: "I wouldn't want to live in it but some people would be happy with a place like that and it fits in with the planning criteria.
"It is a bit narrow but that is the choice of the person who is going to develop it."

Interesting. Is this a reflection of rising housing costs? Will it cost any less to build a house of this size or is it actually going to be more expensive to fit a house into this space?

I guess you would just get used to it - I don't think it would be too bad.. not for a family though!

There are house trailers narrower. They get by. Creative use of volume is the ticket.
