New York City Student Arrested for Doodling on Desk
A New York City junior high student has been arrested for doodling on her desk with a felt marker. Twelve-year-old Alexa Gonzalez was taken away from the school in handcuffs after scribbling ""Lex was here 2/1/10" and "I love my friends Abby and Faith" on her desk.
Gonzalez spent a few hours in police custody because of a doodle the girl says could have easily been erased.
Education department spokesman David Cantor said the whole situation shouldn't have happened, and that common sense should have kicked in at some point.
On top of everything, Gonzalez has to do 8 hours of community service and write an essay on what she's learned during the experience.

I have a feeling I know what she learned from this experience: "school cops are idiots" or something very similar.

Oh! This is unbelievable! Back in the day when I was a NYC public school kid we threw the desks and chairs out the windows! HA!

Maybe she shouldn't have been arrested, but she still needs to learn to treat things in a respectful manner. Would she want someone to use her things and write on them with an inkpen? No, I'm sure not. So if she doesn't learn this in school, where will she learn it, because she apparently hasn't learned it at home.

Really stupid!!!! Wasting tax dollars for something this triveal. Just really, really stupid!!!!!!!! I understand the child needs to be repamanded, but to call the police, that was just stupid! A look at our school system, is it really that bad? Tell Alexa to come to my house and doodle all over my walls, and when Alexa grows up and becomes an artist I`ll be rich!!! The doodle`s were of love and friendship. Give the KID a break.

Reprimanded by whom? The teachers aren't allowed to do s*it anymore and the principal is equally handicapped. The parents don’t give a s*it (as evidenced by the fact they would rather sue than figure out why their daughter is defacing public property). I guarantee this kid will think twice about doing this again, as will her classmates! Good for you teacher!!!

I feel that nyc school system should have handled this whole situation internally.I agree the child should have been reprimanded for her actions,But to waste valuable resources in times where they are limited on an error in judgement by a child , is not only senseless but also a careless use of our governments facilities.
