New York Entrepreneurs Open Bar to Save Money on Bar Tabs
Louis Terline and Jeff Madalena, owners of Oak boutique in New York, have decided to expand their entrepreneurial ventures and open up a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn - so they can save money on their bar tabs.
And as for the inspiration for this latest venture? Purely financial. The guys figure that with the amount they drink, it would be more thrifty to simply open a bar of their own, where they'll always have an open tab.
The "raw, simple" bar is slated to open Spring 2009 in what was once the Staropolski Meat and Market Deli Space.
Financial ingenuity, or a recipe for bankruptcy?

On paper, their idea isn't bad, but they just gotta survive the first few years... and that's a really, really big "if". Owning and operating a bar is much harder than it looks. I know the guy who owns Boat and Great Lakes in Brooklyn, and he works 24/7 to keep them going, and both are very successful in an extremely competitive industry (In other words, he has no other major time-consuming gig going).
For every bar that makes it, there are countless others that just come and go. I wish them well, but they need to go into this thing with eyes wide open.

Best of luck to them.

My friend, who is currently living in Greenpoint, says gentrification is a huge issue there, as it is in many areas of NYC. Old mom n' pop shops and delis that have been around for decades are closing down and in their place new hipster joints are popping up. Some are OK, but my friend said many feel contrived and overdone. Let's hope this place delivers!
