Early 4th of July: NYPD Detonates 5,000 Lbs of Illegal Fireworks

The NYPD piled up all the fireworks that its officers had confiscated during the runup to Independence Day... and set them off. That's 5,000 pounds of fireworks.

This is actually pretty uncool. If the NYPD wanted to recreate the climactic scene from Fulltime Killer, couldn't they at least have done so publicly? Better yet, in view of Brooklyn and Battery Park?

I only suggest that because Brooklyn is getting screwed (again) as the "official" 4th of July fireworks are giving Hoboken preferential treatment.

But no. The fireworks were set off on July 1 (Happy Canada Day!) at the NYPD firing range in The Bronx.
