George Francis, the oldest man in the U.S., has died at the age of 112.

His 81-year-old son Anthony says his father died Saturday of congestive heart failure at a nursing home in Sacramento, Calif. Francis says they called his father the man of three centuries because he lived four years in the 19th Century, all through the 20th Century, and eight years in the 21st Century.

Francis, who at his prime barely weighed more than 100 pounds, was born June 6, 1896, in New Orleans.

Besides his four children, Francis is survived by 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

His wife Josephine died in 1964.

His son says Francis tried to enlist in the U.S. Army during the First World War but was turned down because of his small stature.

His family says even in his waning days, Francis never lost his passion for politics.

He voted for Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930's and for Barack Obama in 2008.

UCLA gerontologist Dr. Stephen Coles, who maintains a list of the world's oldest people, says Francis lived 112 years and 204 days.
