Panhandler shoots man, tries escape by bus

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A bus stop panhandler shot a man who turned down her request for money, Sacramento police said.The shooting took place at 3:45 p.m. Monday at 6th and J streets.Several people turned her down, police said, and she shot the last man who did so. There was some sort of conversation between the man and the woman, Sgt. Matt Young said.A witness told KCRA 3 that the man first told the panhandler "no," and then said, "get a job."The 54-year-old victim was shot once in the stomach and taken to the UC Davis Medical Center for surgery.The woman tried to fire twice but was unsuccessful, police said. She aimed the second time at his head, a witness told KCRA 3.After she fired the shot, the suspect got onto a bus a few blocks away and left the area, Regional Transit officials said.She was detained before 5 p.m. and taken into custody after being questioned in a Target store parking lot at Broadway and Riverside Boulevard. Police said she had a gun in her purse.The woman was taken to the Sacramento County Jail.
