Senior pranks are an age old part of high school culture, but did things go too far when laxitive-laced cupcakes were sent to the teacher's lounge of a Louisiana high school?

The two girls who planned the prank have been expelled from school and are facing criminal charges that could land them in jail. Parents are rallying behind the girls, claiming that the punishment given to the cupcake pranksters is too severe.

Jeannie Nguyen, 17, of Kenner, and Kamrin Kennedy, 17, of Marrero, were expelled from Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy after their principal, Kristi Phillippi, found 22 cupcakes made with the over-the-counter laxative MiraLAX, The Times-Picayune reported.

Authorities said that Nguyen and Kennedy made the cupcakes as a senior prank, but other students warned a teacher to avoid the treats, the New Orleans paper said.

The girls admitted adding the laxative to a cupcake mix and icing, according to a police report. They were booked on charges of mingling harmful substances, which carries a two-year prison sentence and $1,000 fine as punishment, and were suspended for the rest of the school year, The Times-Picayune said.

It's a punishment that parents are calling too tough.

"We're not justifying what these kids did," Kamrin's mother, Marietta Kennedy, told the paper. "But the thing is, we just think the punishment doesn't fit the crime."

Tina Kells, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I think that the punishment fits the crime. Although jail might be a bit too far

They definitely deserved the expulsion, but jail time seems a bit severe.

The punishment is rediculous!  The two teens should have been given detention at most.  It was a harmless prank.  There's a lot more I'd like to say to that Principal, but it wouldn't be appropriate for this forum.

I agree, expulsion was far too severe.

My four cupcake photos shared contained no laxatives. That's not how I bake. ;D

The cupcakes in the pictures I contributed contain nothing but sinful deliciousness! (Coffee and ancho chili cake with mocha mousse filling and cinnamon cream cheese frosting topped with a chocolate covered coffee bean. Frog cupcakes are toasted macadamia coconut with pineapple/rum/brown sugar filling and vanilla buttercream "grass.")

As pranks go, it wouldn't have been very effective; miralax isn't anything like exlax and would be unlikely to produce symptoms in anyone.

Some people can have adverse and allergic reactions to laxatives of any kind. What if the person had pre-existing medical conditions, bowel problems, etc.? It could become quite serious in that case. What is the person had chron's, for example?

They'll never see the inside of a jail cell, probably just probation and hours of community service.

first off, i think that its horrible that the idea of putting laxatives into something that looks and should taste good is disgusting. it ruins it for everyone to feel they need to be cautious over something that should be making someone happy. it's stealing innocence away.

saying that, i think that the punishment fits. It's an example that needed to be set!! Slaps on the wrist don't work anymore these days. The crimes are getting more intense so the punishments should me more intense.

The price of innocence is priceless.

Also, my picture is added to the gallery and they in no way, contain laxatives or anything else !. They just taste darn good!

Suspension fits. I don't think expulsion is the answer. Jail time as part of the punishment is ridiculous. The intent was not to harm anyone. They should be punished, but expelling them on their Senior year is a bit much. The jail time is just simply irrational in my opinion.

and a slideshow featuring over 100 pictures of cupcakes was necessary... why?

First, like others who have had their pictures high-jacked for this story, my cupcakes in no way contain any laxatives or other harmful substances.  Those in my copyrighted photo were absolutely delicious and raved about for weeks!  I would have much preferred a request to use my photo in relation to such an article.  One picture of one cupcake would have sufficed, and you could have made and photographed your own.  And you are still adding more.  There were only 80 pictures earlier today, now 141!  A bit overkill, don't you think?

That being said, I think suspension/expulsion is entirely appropriate.  What seems like a harmless prank could have had very serious health consequences.  Those girls are 17, well old enough to know that their actions could cause people to become extremely ill.  Bottom line, they intentionally tainted food and gave it to their teachers.  They cannot say they didn't know what they were doing.  A good lawyer will get them out of serving any prison time anyway.

(And I would appreciate if you removed my photograph(s) from your article.  Thank you.)

why would they put such substance?

i don't know if the punishment is too severe or not but it could have harmed the health of the teachers. They too have families and if anything happens to them, it may affect their families because a prank made by teenage girls.

to be safer, we should give a safer prank where it will not harm anyone.

Maybe you should read the Code of Conduct for this web site.  Here's a point of interest from the "Don't" category:

2. Plagiarize the work of others, fail to acknowledge source material, or use images that belong to others without their permission.

It seems you have quite a few people upset about you using their photos in relation to your story.  I recognize some of the  usernames of the photos you have used and know them to be professional bakers who make a living from selling the cupcakes in the photos that you have obviously used without permission.  It's my guess that they are not yet aware of your article and the use of their photos.  Does it not concern you that your article casts a negative light on their primary source of income?  And all so that you can move up your "rank".  Tsk tsk.  Shame on you.

They should have been forced to eat all the cupcakes and not be allowed to leave the classroom to go to the bathroom.  Youtube that!

One more thing... it is ridiculous for someone to complain about using a picture of a freaking cupcake in your story.
