Police car chases are unheard of in this archipelagic nation that is the Philippines--not because of low criminality but because of...

Four robbers who victimized a passenger jeep driver in Marikina City managed to escape arrest before dawn Tuesday, after their police pursuers ran out of gas.

Radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported that the experience left driver Marcos Cubacub, 29, not knowing whether to feel amused or frustrated.

Cubacub sought help from Marikina police shortly after he and his conductor were held up along Marcos Highway near Tuason Avenue shortly after leaving their garage at 3:30 a.m.

He said that at the time, four suspects, one of them a woman, boarded his jeep. When two of them got off, a third roughed him up and took his cell phone, then ran off.

The victim sought assistance from a passing police patrol car. After a few minutes of cruising around the area, they saw two of the suspects speeding away on motorcycles.

While the police gave chase, their mobile suddenly ran out of gas. They told Cubacub to "transfer" to another mobile, but by the time the other mobile arrived, the suspects were gone.

Police admitted they have had to make do with five liters of fuel for each vehicle, for a 24-hour period.
