The famous chinese panda, Ling Ling, has died at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo today. The official cause of death was heart failure. In terms of panda years, he lived a long life. Although he was 22 years old by our time standards, he was about 70 years old in panda years. Zoo officials moved Ling Ling from public view on tuesday due to the panda falling ill. He had been at the Ueno zoo since November of 1992. This is the first time that Ueno zoo will be without a panda in 36 years.

My mother made this pillow in 1980 when I was 5. Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing made a big impression on my childhood in the Washington, D.C. area. People were always very hopeful (and sad) regarding their failed attempts to successfully procreate. We loved the pandas.

I have always wanted to see a real panda, and I got to see Ling Ling at Tokyo Zoo in March...can tell you how excited I was then, and how sad I am about this news

It was pretty amazing seeing pandas when we went to Ocean park. They looked so playful and healthy.
It so sad to find out that Ling Ling died.
