A recent accidental find of four ping-pong sized Tatura eggs in New Zealand's mainland has created a genuine buzz about this animal in New Zealand. The discovery of a nest of an animal that was thought to be nearly extinct is quite the find. The last reported sighting of this animal's natural nesting habits dated back about 200 years. Tarturas are last remaining member of the ancient group of reptiles called, Sphenodontia. These reptiles are closely related to the dinosaurs. unlike any modern day lizard. It has been noted that the tuatara had been absent from mainland New Zealand once thought to be rare if not extinct by the late 1700s. The cause is speculated to have happened by rats eating thier eggs. The staff of the Tartura sanctuary uncovered the eggs while preforming maintenance work at the site. This find creates hope of finding more nests in the quest of re-establishing the Tartura's population.
