'Pull Up Your Pants Day' Goes Sag-Free at Florida School

Florida's Plantation High School made headlines this week when they held an Obama election campaign-inspired day to get kids to pull up their pants.

Cleverly named "Pull Up Your Pants Day" the even was held on Thursday and according to the school's ever 'reliable opinion of how kids are really feeling about it' teachers, the even was "a big success".

Inspired by a November MTV News interview with then-candidate Barack Obama, in which he counseled, "brothers should pull up their pants," when asked about ordinances banning saggy pants, the school celebrated "Pull Up Your Pants Day" on Thursday, and by all accounts it was a big success.

And how did this big success come about?

Wal-Mart "supplied 200 free belts" to kids who would otherwise be too saggy for the school's dress code.

The goal of the day was to ensure that no one's underwear was showing — which apparently will guarantee that they'll all be gainfully employed once the leave high school.

9th grade reading teacher Dona McKenzie wasn't afraid to tell it like it is:

"First impressions are important, and we want the kids to remember what Ms. Carter said the other day: We're dressing them for success in their future endeavors. They need to know that they can't apply for a job with their underwear on display."

In this economy, however, saggy pants seems a little low on the priority list for job-seekers.

It actually began in jail, where the guys with the pants showing and their ass-crack out were the "girls" that were the "property" of other guys in the jail.

We, the teachers, saw it in juvenile hall in the late '80s and never could understand the fascination.

It always looked to me like the pants were "full" and they had had an accident in them.

Yes, my father-in-law, a builder and fire battalion commander, wore his work pants like that and used to say that he had been a fashion trend setter.

What was amazing was how one of the comedians on Saturday Night Live, Dan Akroyd, had done a hilarious skit in which he bent over and his behind-crack showed and we all went nuts.

Then a few years later, it is a fashion must.

I think they should make it a national holiday monthly at least.

As a former jail administrator I still struggle with kids being lead to believe that this is fashionable.  These boys truly are "marked" as someone's bxxxx.  I hate it.  The other side is that my daughters are not allowed to show their underwear at school so why should they be subjected to daily viewings of men's undergarmants?  Their right to feel safe and "child-like" has been replaced with some idiot fashion designer's right to capitilize on impressionable youth.  I work in a high-risk high school now and the last thing we need is baggy clothing which makes it easier to conceal contraband.  I know, the kids have rights.  If we are not careful we are going to "protect" our children right out of a future.
