It seems that Mexico is all about breaking world records these days with two previous records busted in a matter of days. August 30, 2009, 549 mariachi bands got together in Guadalajara to break the previous group mariachi world record of 520. The group played for 10 minutes and a representative from the Guiness Book of World Records was present to take official note of the event.

On August 29, 2009 another record was broken in Mexico City but this one was not witnessed by Guiness Book of World Record observers. Thousands turned out in Mexico City dressed in full monster / zombie gear to break the world record for the most people doing the Thriller dance in one place.

The Thriller dance world record attempt was in honor of King of Pop Michael Jackson who died in June, 2009. August 29, 2009 would have been Jackson's 51st birthday. The Guiness Book of World Records will announce sometime next week whether or not it will accept the Thriller dance record set on Michael Jackson's birthday.

A total of 549 musicians got together to win the record for the birthplace of mariachi Sunday, playing several songs in just over 10 minutes, closing with favorites "Cielito Lindo" and "Guadalajara."

A representative of the Guinness Book of World Records, Stuart Claxton, made it official at the International Mariachi Festival.

The old record belonged to 520 mariachis who performed in San Antonio, Texas, in 2007, said Francisco Beckman, an organizer of the record-breaking attempt.
