The return of the Shamrock Shake - McDonalds brings back a cult classic
Remeber the days of the McRib? Or McDonalds pizzas? Or what about the McCafe that was a short-lived marketing enterprise that was supposed to encorage a Starbucks crowd to the restaurant, but only managed to drive customers away with their sorry excuse for a latte?
Well, unfortunately for some, these items are not coming back. However, the head honchos at Mickey D's have answered the call to bring back the much loved Shamrock Shake, just in time for St. Patricks Day no less.
It seems as if this is a well overdue move on their part, because a quick search on the internet for 'Shamrock Shake' unveiled many sites, such as this one that is a petition to bring back the shake permanently, and this one where shake lovers can post their 'Shamrock Shake excursions' on youtube and then add it to the site. You can also see youtube videos of the shake itself, and find out where the shake is being sold across America.
It may seem strange to go to all this trouble for a milkshake, but never having had one, I suppose I cannot pass judgement.
I'll have to keep a lookout at my local McDonalds for this much beloved beverage.
Check out our article from last year here.
Starting on February 26th, for a limited time, the Shamrock Shake will be available in participating McDonald's restaurants across the country.
Not seen in Canada for more than five years, the Shamrock Shake has gained an almost cult-like following. In recent years, enthusiasts have begun banding together online with dedicated Web sites, blogs and fan groups - celebrating the nostalgia and great taste of the shake and pleading for its return.
"We are so excited to re-introduce a product that so many of our customers love," says Laurie Laykish, Senior Vice President, Menu and Strategy, at McDonald's Canada. "We knew the shake had maintained a nostalgic connection with customers - we just couldn't believe how many of them had taken the discussion to a whole new level online."
Also making an appearance is Uncle O'Grimacey - the elusive McDonaldland(R) character from yesteryear. As the fable goes, O'Grimacey is the uncle of the beloved character Grimace and visits his nephew in March, leading up to St. Patrick's Day, just in time to enjoy the incredibly delicious Shamrock Shake. Canadians can become friends with O'Grimacey and join his Shamrock Shake group by clicking here:

Limited-time offers such as the Shamrock Shake have traditionally elicited excitement and anticipation from customers across Canada. Despite his Irish lineage, Ben Mulroney, host of CTV's eTalk and Canadian Idol, longs for a different menu item from the past and is among the many customers who have made heartfelt pleas to bring back the McRib(R) sandwich.
With the return of the Shamrock Shake, and an increasing demand from customers for the return of old favourites, Canadians are left wondering: what will be next?

UGH... I'm ashamed to admit that this is something from MacDonald's that might make me step through it's doors for the first time in close to five years... oh the lovely, almost minty, green shame of it all... I can not resist it...

I love the Shamrock Shake! The McDonalds in my town used to sell it, but it doesn't anymore that I am aware of. It's delicious and all American McDonalds' should sell it. Yay!

I may be too late in leaving you this information, but Lancaster, SC (which isn't far from Charlotte, NC at all) has Shamrock Shakes. Also, Rock Hill, SC (about 10 miles south of Charlotte) does as well at the McDonalds right off of I-77 on Cherry Road. From the looks of it, a lot of McDonald's are supposed to be participating in Shamrock Shakes this year. Call around your area.
