Rex Roland, a Teacher at Enka Middle School in North Carolina, in Trouble for Calling Student a Loser on her Paper

Rex Roland, who teaches sixth grade at Enka Middle School in Candler, North Carolina, said he was joking when he called one of his students a 'loser' on her paper, but her mother Patty Clement does not see it that way.

She wants Rex Roland to be suspended.

This is not the first time Mr. Roland has called that student a loser either. Back in November he also wrote 'loser' in red ink on the girl's paper and this time he wrote 'minus 20% for being a loser' and then underlined 'loser' twice. ABC has a video report of the story.

Patty Clement complained about the conduct in November when it happened the first time, but now it has happened again, she wants Rex Roland to be suspended.

"This is telling her that you're a loser, you're not going to go anywhere," Clement said.

The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying the matter was being looked in to and the principal and Mr. Roland have met with Ms. Clement but says that it is not enough. She wants teachers to inspire, not break down children.

Rex Roland has been teaching at the school for 12 years, but Ms. Clement removed her daughter from his class. Some parents said Mr. Roland was just trying to relate to his students but no one would go on record in his defense.

Any one that puts down a child like that should go straight to hell. That is NO WAY to joke!! I don't even call my own daughters losers, so no one else has that right to call a child names....they are supposed to TEACH and the child usually looks up to and trusts because they are a teacher. This person was immature and hurtful this child's self esteem is probably low now because of the comments. You'd be surprised at how much ONE WORD can DESTROY a child's esteem and cause failure to strive. There are kids out there like my 4 yr old that has birth defects and Cerebral Palsy and other conditions and she goes to special needs preschool I  met with her teacher many times before I let her go and I be DAMNED if ANYONE will call my child names! She is non verbal and mostly in her own world and doesn't bother anyone and I'm sure this little 12 yr old didn't do any harm to the teacher that called her a loser. THE REAL LOSER is the teacher the right to teach or be around kids should be ripped from this person and doesn't DESERVE to be around God's gifts! All they deserve to do is BURN!~BRANDI ALEMAN FROM NORTH VERNON INDIANA YEAH I AINT SCARED

What is this fairy tale world we live in where everyone is special? I hate to sound callous, but life is not a preschool soccer league and everyone will not get a trophy for showing up. Some of the children in his class will end up using their wits, looks, or athletic abilities to accomplish great things, and some will end up working at 7-11 and living in a trailer. Many children by the age of 12-15 will start to show into which of these catagories they will fall. You are not subhuman for making and vocalizing this observation. What he did was probably not it the best taste but this man is not a murder or baby rapist. And he said "loser" on the paper in question, not "retarded." But somehow because he was close to saying "retarded" the parent of every autistic child in america with an internet connection feels the need to justify how special their child is and how name calling is unacceptable. The phrase "Grossly incompetent indivual who consistantly fails and makes bad decisions" is a little too long to slip into my everyday vernacular so FORGIVE ME sometimes, I say "retard." Im am truly and deeply NOT sorry if this offends you. If you do happen to the parent of a severly autistic or birth disabled child, while i have no doubt the love you bear them is immeasurable, realize that they will more than never likely be contributing members to society and dont expect the rest of us to tiptoe through the thorn bush of politcal correctness at all times in order to spare YOUR feelings.

Dear Nicholas Anna:I guess if school should work like life does, that means if some one calls my child a name, I should be able to bash his or her teeth down their throats right. By the way, I own my home and it's not in a trailer either which. I still can't understand how anyone can make fun of a person who is living and paying for a trailer as it's not public housing nor will welfare pay for it. I know people that have trailers with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a fireplace.  I had a teacher call my daughter a name when she was in middle school and he got fired after the Principle saved him from getting his but kicked. And I don't want to hear the "It was a joke." bull. He has singled out this kid and by doing so said to the other children "It's O.K. for all of you to hurt her any way you want.  As for your great theory about 11 or 12 year old children and how by this age their fate is already set. WHO DIED AND LEFT YOU THE INTELLECT? I can show you many children that at that age according to quote "Experts", they would never be anything, they'd be in jail by 20, they could never learn, and the list goes on and on. Yet, these same children with encouragement, are rich (some of them), contribute to society (and not working at 7-11 which I also say Whats wrong with that. It's honest work). Have children in private schools, are great Mothers, Fathers, Husbands. and Wives. Best of all, they have surpassed any of the same teacher's pets.  I say It's about time somebody did something about teachers that enable bullies and there are a lot of them in the school system that hide behind their tenor. The teacher's union allow people that have no business teaching a hamster and they are teaching our children and grand children. It's time they clean house. As far as, 'Life isn't fair and we should teach children about life early", you should never have children or have yours taken away before you decide to show them the pain of being raped or something. Childhood should be just that and that's why adults are supposed to protect them from the evils of the world. As for you, go stick your head in the toilet to remind yourself of your own school days and stop pretending you know what you're talking about.

your a loser Nicholas Anna!!

yer a fuckin idiot!!! What he did is not teaching, and if that was my kid I would be looking for that teacher after school with some friends to show him what loser he is for picking on kids!!You don't put down kids that are trying their best to learn The teacher job is to teach which is something to complex for you understand

I agree w u 100%. If that SOB ever did that to my daughter , i'd knock his teeth down his throat and break both his hands w a baseball bat. Then he wouldn't be able to write that on anyone else school work.  I'm so livid mad about this and I don't even live near there. He's not someone I would want teaching my kids.

If you actually did something like this, you'd be in prison.

Based on your anger issues, not only do I hope you're not a teacher but not allowed on school grounds.

I hope you're not a teacher. Because you and this so called teacher in NC are losers and retards.

Wow...Albert Einstein was told by every teacher he had from elementary to college that he would never amount to anything. He also would have most likely been diagnosed as mildly autistic if that diagnosis existed when he was young. Do you know who Albert Einstein was? Given the content of your above post, I'm quite sure you don't.

It doesn't matter if someone else relates this to one of their relatives.. that part is irrelevant.  The part that IS relevant, is this man is a TEACHER.  It is not professional for a teacher to do something like this.  Don't children have enough stress in their life with the NCLB act and all teh standardized tests they have to deal with already...on top of the peer pressure, etc that goes along with being a pre-teen.  I don't care if he's teasing, or serious.. it's wrong.  There are ways you can joke with your students that are acceptable.  Name calling isn't one of them!  Do we really want to teach our children it's okay to call other people names just to fit in?  I will not be teaching my children name calling is acceptable, nor will I let my future students call each other names once I graduate from college and get my first teaching position.

Yeah, but when did we become a society where we feel it is OK to hurt someone else for no good reason.  I don't buy into all the PC crap either, but that doesn't give you the right to put someone else down.  Simple rule if you don't have anything nice to say then keep it to yourself.

Disgusted Future Educator

I could not have said it better myself and I 100% agree, with all your statements. Tragic and when an educator stoops to such a ridiculous level, all in all he is burned out, it happens. After 12yrs, I am sure things have gotten to him and unfortunately he did not have the correct knowledge to joke (if that is what he 'suggested'), motivate (was told this was why), and/or decipher the situation at hand. Thank You

" Many children by the age of 12-15 will start to show into which of these catagories they will fall." what a load of bullshit."realize that they will more than never likely be contributing members to society and dont expect the rest of us to tiptoe through the thorn bush of politcal correctness at all times in order to spare YOUR feelings"its not political correctness dear. have some humanity, or you'll be worst than a non contributing member of society.

I am a parent of a born disabled child and do not expect him to be treated special. I have told him since birth that it is going to be harder for him to get people to accept him and that he will have to work extra hard to get what he wants out of life. He is a contributing member of society and doesn't live in a trailer park or work at 7-11. His art work has sold for thousands of dollars and he is just one of many like him. For you to be so uneducated where it comes to disabled people in general really chaps my hide. Yet, you make the statement that people with disabilities will never be a contributing member of society. You obviously do not know the meaning of 'retarded' (it means slow) which you have shown that you truly are. To make a broad spectrum statement that you have, you have set yourself up to have someone in your life become disabled. Now you tell me, will you be willing to accept them or are you the type to ship them off to some facility where you won't have to deal with it. I see you doing the facility because of your own shortcomings where it comes to looking beyond your own nose and into the community around you. I am blessed to have a productive severely disabled child and he will ALWAYS be loved no matter how shortsighted some people can be...

To Nicholas Anna:Like anyone wants to meet the prostituting pig that spit you out. She ever give you the 50 names of the men (or mules) that could be your daddy?

Normally I'd say to hell with Political correctness, but since you seem to think it's just PC to 'tiptoe through the thorn bush', I'm gonna give you a damn clue. I'm mentally disabled, it took me 10 years to succeed in college. I have Grammar problems still, but I can tell you I'm about 15,000 times more intelligent then you are. I know this because people with my specific brand of Learning disability are usually smarter then average people, our brains just work at a faster pace so things get left out. If you called me a Retard in life. I would grab you by the neck and slam your head into a wall until you passed out, I get extremely tired of classless morons like you. It's not a matter of PC  you stupid bastard! It's called being -polite- which apparently your parents were worse then barn animals since you apparently lack any form of manners.

>anonymous<

So in addition to being retarded you're violent? Superb dear boy, that's some really class stuff you have to contribute.

5
pissed off

Well Nick, while it is true that the world has a little bit too much political correctness going on, it doesn't mean that you have to bring up the subject of autism or autistic kids into the conversation.  That right there was in poor taste especially since the topic at hand has nothing to do with autism.  The main thing is that as a teacher no matter how irrelevant a child may be it is not their job to say whether or not a kid is a loser or a winner in any grading context, their job is to do the best they can at teaching each child and in the end some will succeed and others will not, thats the only true fact of life.  Writing responses nitpicking autism and saying things like they will never amount to anything is a real world is an asshole move in my book and it takes a real jerk to say things like that and its no wonder this world is going to hell and a hand basket with such shitty ways of thinking.

Nicholas-You are the REAL loser dude not the kid..its for people like u that this country is going to hell-LOSER-LOSER-LOSER

4
nacielynn

Name calling is way out of line! He should have simply given the child the grade she deserved and left it at that. In my opinion this teacher is the LOSER! A grown man calling a 6th grade girl a loser? He needs to take a very close look at himself. He should be fired for these types of teaching methods. What lesson could she possibly get from this comment??!!

2
CarolinaGirl

Wow! No brain cells sacrificed in summoning that comment. I suspect you are fairly young and without children of your own. If you aren't, however, I think those 'retards' have a leg up on you. I just wish they could piss all over you the way you have with this asinine, verbal vomit you call an opinion (because it isn't factual at all). Your statements are reprehensible, vile, licentious and downright evil. You better be careful what you put out there into the ether. When you pursue the option to have children it would be a real shame to see someone, like yourself, wind up with an autistic child. Most 'competent' people know you can learn something from everyone. Autistic children teach people patience and humility. Something you, OBVIOUSLY, know nothing about...and I dare say you haven't the skill set to grasp. So go put that in the proverbial pipe and smoke it. Oh...and blow it out your ass...Retard - a person considered to be foolish or socially inept.(eyeroll)...what an idiot!

Wow, Nicholas Anna.  you think that people need to have wit, looks, and athletic abilities to accomplish great things.  what a shallow bunch of crap.  you say that people with disabilities will more than likely never be contributing members to society.  even though their disabilities may hold them back, they may find a way.  at least they are more sympathetic than people who have so much pride because of their wit, looks, and athletic abilities.  i have suffered from asperger's syndrome, and i was a straight a student.  i started to struggle in my 11th grade year because of depression, but if it weren't for that, i still would've been a straight a student.  you need to let people know how they are special and nurture them before you expect them to have it hard.  yeah, you shouldn't always make it easy for people so that they can be capable of doing things and standing on their own, but a 6th grade girl is innocent and will take things personally and get hurt a lot easier than you will.  she's not an adult with an adult mind necessarily, with resiliency.

I am truly in shock about your attitude. I thank God every day I sent my boy to private schools where he received a respectful and highly advanced education. If he had been subjected to people with attitudes like yours, I am sure he would have turned out badly.

Oh wow

Oh wow.  Nicholas Anna your argument is a little off base don't you think.  The question was not whether or not this student is a loser or "retarded" as you say, or fat or ugly or has warts all over their face or will never be able to read a book without pictures, as I'm sure you have trouble doing - the question is should this teacher be aloud to voice his negative, degrading, offensive personal opinions to an impressionable young child.  Whether he thinks this child will ever "contribute" to society has nothing to do with his job and role as a teacher.  His job is to teach, thereby encouraging students to be "contributing members of society" - not to pick them off before they reach the gate because he thinks they'll never make it.  Besides I would like you to define contributing member of society, because according to your argument all 7-11 employees are useless.  Why not just shut down all 7-11s?  In fact why don't we just decide who's useless at birth and then put them out of our misery before we have to deal with them as adults - I know I could have lived without your "contribution." Anyway the point is HE CALLED HIS STUDENT A LOSER you ...

My goodness, you are self-righteous and callous. In fact, you sound like a very bitter, unhappy person. How wonderfully ironic it would be if one day you had a special needs child in your life whom you love and want to protect.
