Pit bulls and Rottweilers have long been jointly categorized as dangerous dogs but today the breeds were on opposing sides of an attack on a South African boy.
Two-year-old Tshepang Taeli was walking with his grandmother in Oakdene, a suburban area outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, when a pit bull attacked. The boy was being mauled by the pit bull when the Rottweiler was called in to action by its owner.
One of the neighbours, Ricky Veludo, came to help and then went to fetch his dog, Blade. "He fought the other dog to free the child," he told a local paper.
"Blade is very protective," Mr Veludo told Die Beeld newspaper.
Despite the frantic attempts of witnesses trying to free Tshepang the pit bull managed to maintain its hold on the boy, dragging him down the street. Had it not been for Blade, the rescuing Rottweiler, the boy may have been killed.
Tshepang was rushed to hospital with bites and injuries to his face, legs and stomach. The injuries, if any, to Blade are unknown. South African police are investigating the incident.
