The two images of the dark rooms are capture by me. Sorry for the clarity given that I had to take it quickly since it was a spy shot and taken with a cellphone. Both rooms have only one girl in the room studying in it.
SFU Surrey has many study places. They have tables dispersed throughout the third to fifth floor, designated open studying area on the fifth floor, benches by the stairs, computer labs, and probably other places too. But sometimes it is impossible to find a private room to study in.
I prefer to study in a room because I, and probably others, enjoy individual study time in a group setting so when questions arise they can ask addressed. However, the conversation will not interrupt others who are trying to focus. Furthermore, I need to study in an area where I do not hear people attempt to whisper. They either pretend or really do not know that their noise level is beyond a whisper. Or perhaps you have people shuffling back and forth constantly joking around in the library. So I have eliminated the option of studying in an open space, the library, and any other areas that is not enclosed for private use. Computer labs are no use when I already have a laptop and I only need a space to study, not a Mac that takes up half the area that I would want to use.
I just want to rewind back a little to those that talk just a little too loud, or laugh and have a social gathering at the wrong places. You would think people would know better. Common courtesy goes hand in hand with common sense. It is just not that common! Why do people always fail to respect others? Just because you want to have a laugh or good time does not mean you can redeem your happiness by neglecting others! Learn some manners and take it elsewhere.
Study rooms around SFU surrey have rules where at least two/three individuals are present in order to use it. These are rules set by the school and are carried out by the security. However, I never fail to see the following: one person with their backpack on one chair, eating and doing something in a room that can fit five or even more people. It just grinds my gears real bad. Why do you need a room that can fit so many for yourself? Can you not walk into the library to find a seat for yourself or situate yourself in an open area? If you can not stand miscellaneous noise like myself, then go into the quiet room in the library that have individual sections complemented with comfy cushioned chairs and lots of work space. Your backpack is not a human enterprise. You do not make up two persons. (Yes, even if you are pregnant I will still count you as one entity.) So what justifies your actions you greedy, inconsiderate student? Furthermore, are you even an SFU student?
Bottom line, I am fed up with waiting for rooms or kicking out people that are not following the rules. I am pissed off that security does not kick out individuals that occupy one room with one body out. Why should I be the one clearing out the lawbreakers? I am annoyed at the low level of integrity so many students have. They can be opened up so others can utilize the room in the context of which it was intended for; a group of students. I am appalled that SFU Surrey houses so many other college and UBC students. What are we? A drop-in school for the community? It is injustice that SFU students must share our study space with other non-SFU students. Lastly, those that have broken the study room laws, please clean up after yourselves. I really do not want to know what dressing you had for your Subway from early that day or how you love to chew the straw to your juice box.
There are so many problems involved with this situation. SFU should take a greater part in ensuring their students are not deprived of their promised rights and resources. Furthermore, SFU students should abide the school's rules.

Good point brought up. The Halifax Libraries in NS, while a good source of books, do not have any quiet rooms, and now with all the computers clicking away, it is even more noisy. I am appalled by this change. Glad to see BC is still hanging on.
I wish the quiet rooms would come back. In this busy world they are hard to find.

Great original piece, but I think you may have to tag it as opinion... if you go back to edit, click on the box that says opinion.

Wow sara star, I'm shocked that nothing has been said about that! I find continuous disruptions worse than just a brief distraction. I think I'd pull my hair out if I tried studying in the Halifax Libraries. Hope changes will be made for all the users. It's so unfortunate how some people use the library as a gathering/hang out hot spot.

Does anyone know why I can't remove the tags 'culture' and 'strange'? I tried changing it back to just 'choose channel' slot but it won't omit the previously selected channels.

The story has to have a channel, that's why it won't let you remove those.
If you choose another channel and a sub-channel, then you will be able to remove those other tags.
