Plans are underway to sink the USS Vanderburg off the coast of Florida in the hopes of creating an artificial reef. The USS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenburg that will be sunk seven miles off the Florida Keys. The hope is that the Vandenberg will become a habitat for marine life as well as a tourist attraction, drawing divers from around the world.

Of course, the USS Vandenberg had an active life as a warship, one that many veterans won't forget any time soon.

"I don't think the world will ever know that so many things that led to means to defend the United States started off with a bunch of guys that were high school and college graduates and electronic technicians and engineers that were out to sea 30, 60 and 90 days at a time," Utecht said.
