Guatemala Sinkhole Sparks Concern, Great Opening Sentences

Inocenta Hernandez, a 65-year-old grandmother living in Guatemala City, found a sinkhole forming under her bed. At first, Hernandez thought a neighbor's gas canister exploded, but her neighbors said the sound came from her house.

Upon further inspection, Inocenta Hernandez found the 40-ft-deep sinkhole under her bed. Guatemala City is no stranger to sinkholes.

Nobody was hurt when the sinkhole formed, though Hernandez' grandchildren were running around the house at the time. An AFP photographer got a pretty amazing photo, which is making the rounds. There will no doubt be video footage soon as well, not counting the spammy stuff on YouTube.

We're not the only ones to think that this story is like something out of Donnie Darko. A few different news outlets clearly had fun writing about the Guatemala sinkhole:

You may sometimes wish the ground would swallow you up, but for some the danger of disappearing down a deep hole is all too real.

It’s the stuff scary movies are made of: Don’t look under the bed, or you’ll fall through a giant chasm in the earth.

A Guatemalan grandma got a sinking feeling when she discovered the earth had cracked open and left a 40-foot hole beneath her bed.
