Soup kitchen opens up for dogs in Berlin
A soup kitchen for dogs has opened up in Berlin. The soup kitchen, opened up by Claudia Hollm, is called Animal Board. They provide meals for dogs of the homeless, and also to people who have recently lost their job. Animal Board is supported by several companies, including makers of animal food.
A soup kitchen exclusively for dogs has opened its doors in Berlin providing pets of the homeless and unemployed with a free meal, the director of the establishment said on Friday.
Despite the looming financial crisis, director Claudia Hollm dismissed criticism that it may be more sensible to collect money for humans than for dogs.
"Nowadays people underestimate dogs. They are incredibly important for those who lack social contact with other humans," Hollm told Reuters.
"Making sure dogs don't go hungry is just as important as making sure that people don't starve," she added.
Animal Board has been lucky enough to benefit from sponsorship from several companies, including some animal food companies. One woman who used the service for her dogs, cats and her rabbit told a local newspaper:
Without this animal bread line, I’d probably starve to death.
Berlin is currently becoming very animal friendly as last month the city opened a bus service that caters just for dogs, ferrying the animals to and from their day-care centres.

San Francisco I came upon this man, and gave him a couple of dollars to take his picture with his very well behaved dog.

I saw him and the dogs when I was vitisiting Paris last year. You can't resist to put couple of coins in his little red basket.

It is a nice gesture. We tend to concentrate on humans too much and overlook homeless animals all too often.

Took this picture in Cambridge City Centre, and was a bit shocked when I first saw the people on it.
What you don't see in the picture is that someone (her boyfriend I think) is standing around asking for a few coins.
I think this is a good example of how big differences there is in todays community.

barliquin has contributed a photo to this story. In Vancouver, there is a pet food bank for the animals of homeless and low income people called Charlie's Pet Food Bank, which operates out of Oppenheimer Park, on Wednesdays from 10-12. For more information contact Mission Impossible (543 Powell St.) There is also one shelter, at least, in Vancouver for homeless people that takes companion animals. Unfortunately I don't have the name to hand.

This was taken in San Diego, CA. This man and his dog were very attached to each other and he was happy to pose for some photos with his little friend.

This was taken in Los Angeles. LA has both a huge homeless population and a huge problem with unwanted pets.

Dogs can keep a human warm on a cold winter night. That is what the term "three-dog-night" really means.

I took my foto in Bologna, I was making the shots that had the theme of loneliness. When I saw this boy with your dog I immediately took the photo because the first thing I thought was the loneliness, even if this loneliness is bearable thanks to the company of man's best friend.

Does the staff go out and wrangle the dogs, or do they wait for the dogs to just show up?

Well, this photo was taken in London 1 year ago. I was going to visit the Shakespeare Globe and when i walked up the stairs I noticed this man with his dog. First I didn't pay attention to him, but when I had turned my back on him, I ran back and gave him 2 pounds. It felt so amazing! The feeling I had helped him and his dog made me happy for the rest of the day. I have always been kind towards homeless people and buskers, but those words what the man told me are going to last forever. "Thank you madam, you're a good person," he told me. That was touching.
