Speedy Senior: "I'm No Street Racer"

A 76-year-old Pembroke-area man doesn't see himself as a street racer, but the law clearly does.
Norman Harding was charged going 50 km/h over the speed limit on Jan. 17. As a result, his car was impounded, his licence was suspended for seven days and he was fined $2,000.
Harding feels the new Safer Roads for a Safer Ontario Act was aimed at street racers, not an elderly man in a hurry driving his wife to a non-emergency doctor's appointment.
"Hopefully, I can explain to them that I am not this kind of person," said the soft-spoken man of his Feb. 21 court date in Killaloe.

Good grief!
Many years ago I was late for work and already having a penchant towards using my "lead foot," I deliberately hit 30 miles over the speed limit (stupid I know, but I was young.)
I was busted by a speed camera and not only had to pay $250, but I also had to hand my license in at the closest police station for a suspension of one month!
And this "soft spoken man" who was travelling 50 miles over the speed limit, only has his license suspended for 7 days!
I guess Australia 20 years ago were more forceful with their anti-speeding laws, than America ever was!

Yeah, my experience with driving in Oz (as of a few years ago) was that they really take a no-BS approach to driving infractions, particularly drink driving/DUI.
