It is not the courts fault, it is not the fault of the CSA, it is not the wifes fault, it is the fault of the man who put a pillow over his child and smothered that child to death. He chose to kill his children. His decision, nobody elses.

The last time Kerry Hughes saw her two young daughters, their estranged father was picking them up for the weekend.

A day later, he phoned her to say he had killed them.

David Cass, 32, told her: 'The children have gone to sleep for ever and now I'm going to hang myself.'

A terrified Miss Hughes rang 999 but by the time police arrived at her estranged partner's caravan home, all three were dead.

Ellie, three, and Isobel, 13 months, had been smothered in the caravan while their father's body was hanging from a girder at the nearby garage where he worked.

Miss Hughes, 24, was being comforted by her family as detectives tried to work out what drove Cass to take such terrible action on Sunday night.

It remained unclear whether Miss Hughes had started to date someone else, but it emerged that Cass, a car mechanic, had been suffering from depression after separating from his partner.
