Police have come to the conclusion that Agneta Westlund, a woman from the Swedish town of  Loftahammer who died last year, was actually killed by an elk and not her husband. While husband Ingemar Westlund was the prime suspect following her death, a lengthy investigation has rendered him innocent.

Agneta Westlund was last seen by her family prior to taking her dog out for a walk. She never returned home so her husband went looking for her and found her body. Ingemar Westlund was arrested and jailed for 10 days but then released upon lack of evidence. The murder investigation was dropped five months ago and now there is finally some evidence as to how exactly his wife died.

Ingemar Westlund, aged 68, found the dead body of his wife Agneta, 63, by a lake close to the village of Loftahammer in September 2008.

A forensics team has found what they believe to be elk saliva and hair on Agneta Westlund's clothing. It is now being suggested that an elk was responsible for her death with the explanation that European elk specifically can become aggressive if they have ingested fermented apples.

While elk are normally considered to be people shy and quiet creatures, this new evidence suggests that an aggressive elk may have come across Agneta Westlund and attacked her. Case details will be revealed at a news conference tomorrow in Sweden.

Well, THAT is certain to open up a new line for defense counsel in the future.

"It wasn't my client, your Honor, it was those beastly elk!"
